FRIENDS OF SCARBOROUGH LIBRARY
The annual book sale is the Friends major fund-raiser of the year. During the annual 4-day Book Sale event, hundreds of bargain hunters come to the book sale looking for the perfect summer read! With more than 20,000 donated books, puzzles, and audio-visual titles to choose from, readers of all ages will find at least one book by their favorite author at this annual Friends sponsored event.
Thank you!The Friends of the Scarborough Library would like to express their gratitude to the many dedicated volunteers and book sale patrons who helped make the 2019 Book Sale a great success. Hundreds came to the high school during this year's 4-day event to browse our collection of 18,000+ donated books, audiobooks, and DVDs. The gross intake was just over $12,000. Our wonderful treasurer, Pat Lennox, is in the process of gathering all of the bills to be paid. We should have final numbers for posting in August. Many thanks to all of our volunteers. We could not have done it without you. And special kudos to the new Chairperson this year, Joyce Clark, for a job well done. The funds earned from the sale help provide supplemental support to the Library for their collections and programming – including the very popular Youth Summer Reading Program, movie licenses for the monthly Monday Movie at the Library, and free passes to Maine cultural institutions and parks. Unsold items were once again donated to non-profit organizations, local teachers, and Goodwill, who cordially picked them up for us. The annual Book Sale would not have been possible without the support and cooperation of the Scarborough School Department, especially Todd Jepson, Facilities Manager and Susan Ketch, Principal of Scarborough High School. The maintenance people and custodial staff at the high school could not have been more helpful. Members from the Class of 2022, along with their advisor, Sarah Belton, were also a great help during both the setting up and breaking down days. We would like to acknowledge all the efforts of our invaluable volunteers who transport the donated books to the Scarborough Public Works Department week after week, as well as our devoted sorters who work tirelessly for months ahead of the sale. A special thank you to the local businesses who assisted us with our advertising. We truly appreciate it. And finally, SPW is to be highly commended, as they provide storage space for all the books throughout the year and deliver these books to the site prior to the sale. Many thanks to Mike Shaw, Director of Public Works, Dave Pinkham and the rest of the SPW crew for all their assistance. Again, your donated books and purchases at the sale were greatly appreciated. They signal your strong support of the Library and the Friends of the Scarborough Library. Donations for next year's book sale are being accepted at the Library foyer now through the end of May 2020. Sue Helms, President,
Volunteer @ the Book Sale: The success story of the Friends Book Sale would not be complete if we failed to recognize the extraordinary effort of the very dedicated volunteers who make this event possible. Many hands make light work, or at least make it seem that way. By donating your time, you help the Friends and the Library, but it's also fun! Volunteers see old friends, neighbors, and even former classmates. |
