The FOSL program committee began a new adventure this year (2012-2013) with the inauguration of an Adult Literature Series. The long range plan is to pick a topic each year and offer programs around that theme.
Our first year was a huge success using the theme of murder mysteries, a very popular genre with our Library patrons. We began with the lovely ladies, Paula and Ann from Mainely Murders Bookstore in Kennebunkport.
We hosted Maine authors Kate Flora and Gerry Boyle who entertained us with their trials as authors and the development of their characters. The final program was a panel of authors, Lea Wait, Jessie Crockett and Janis Bolster, from the New England organization, Sisters in Crime.
The committee also engaged Wentworth teachers Patrick Reagan and Justin Stubbins (shown in photo right with Mystery cast) to provide a young people's interactive murder mystery night. About 40 students in grades 4-7 attended and thoroughly enjoyed working to solve the mystery with characters being played by Scarborough High School students.
Finally the program committee was fortunate to have local author Monica Wood come to our Annual Members Meeting in May. She gave an entertaining and enlightening program that was enjoyed by all who attended.
This next school year the committee will continue the Adult Literature Series with the theme of "Living In Maine." In keeping with the results of our membership survey we are currently working on getting Maine authors from a variety of different professions to be our presenters. We are also going to vary our program times with two programs being offered in the evening and two being offered on Sunday afternoons.
Announcements of our programs are always on our Web site and in the Library"s Footnotes. We look forward to seeing you.
